The European Chapter of the INS

section01

The European Chapter of the International Netsuke Society has existed for well over 15 years, but has always struggled with the vast geographical spread included in its membership. Meetings held to coincide with auctions were usually well attended, but many people were never able to join us for these evenings.

At a board meeting in 1975 the idea of holding 'meetings on paper' was mooted, with the publication of a modest magazine that would cover European events and give a voice to European collectors. In the autumn of 1975 we proudly presented our first issue of 26 pages. Initially a quarterly publication, we moved to the more manageable production of two larger 64-page issues per annum. This was always intended to run alongside the INS Journal, covering more local topics, as well as ones of universal interest.

Costs have obliged us to keep the format to black and white, although our last issue of 2009 was printed in colour. You can have a look at a pdf of it by clicking on the 'magazine' icon on the home page.

We are entirely funded by dealer advertisements and membership subscriptions.

The president of the European chapter, David Burditt is always looking for new articles and members' letters to publish. He also organizes several events a year, including visits to museum collections and occasional private viewings of museum collections, as well as 'show-and-tell' evenings. The bigger our membership, the more we can organize.
